Window treatments and landscaping
May 4th, 2006 by KenricOne thing many new homeowners fail to take into account with new construction is that the house comes with pretty much nothing. You will have to buy window treatments, ceiling fans and lights and front and back landscaping. So that’s what I spent the last week doing.
I went to Home Depot and bought 2″ white faux wood blinds for almost all of my windows and two ceiling fans. Total cost was $1,000. I have one window that required a custom blind. Home Depot wanted $80 for the order but I found it online for $42. One ceiling is 20′ high and I need to install a ceiling fan on it. I called a tool rental shop and they had 16′ step ladders for $33/day. After thinking about standing on the top of a 16′ ladder in the middle of the room with a heavy ceiling fan I decided to hire a contractor to install it. The contractor I hired is charging $105 to install the fan.
HOA rules say that I must landscape the front yard within 90 days. New construction neighborhoods have business people coming by constantly with business cards to sell you things. Today a guy with a truck full of large landscaping rocks pulled up and was selling them like people selling speakers from a van. He said he just finished a job and had these rocks left over and wanted to get rid of them cheap. Come on, who brings an extra 4 tons of rocks to a job site? It’s not like their client said no I don’t want the 20 huge extra rocks you brought. I didn’t end up buying any rocks, but my neighbor bought 4.
I’ve had two landscapers and one window treatment person stop by. They just drive down the street and when they see people outside they swoop in.
