Update on my bookselling and Google Adwords

October 17th, 2006 by Kenric

It has been a great eight day learning experience since I decided to try out an affiliate program and Google adwords.  I decided to shut down the Google Adwords portion of the campaign today.

I had set up Adwords to spend just $1.20 a day.  I had many ad impressions with just that small amount of money.  Apparently, my keywords were cheap per click.  As for book sales I actually sold 1 book on Barnes & Nobles with only 79 clicks.  On Amazon, I sold 5 books on 86 clicks.  When all is said and done, I figure I’m down $16 total, including the $6 domain name and $5 sign up fee for Google.  It’s not that bad actually if you consider that $11 were sunk costs.  I’m only -$4 after a week.  I’m sure with some more work and knowledge I could get a site to be profitable.   Problem is that this site is very targeted and has a short lifespan. I’m very suprised by the click through rate of the google ads.  It seems like a very cheap way to drive traffic to a site.

An additional benefit was that traffic to this blog increased through that link on the page.
