Tucson fixer upper day #3
February 9th, 2007 by KenricI called a second contractor to go give me an estimate. He should have an estimate by Monday.
The electrician says that we need the fuse box fixed and a new electric meter box. He quoted me $800. That’s to get the house to code so the power company can juice up the house.
We’ve tossed out two 20 yard dumpsters worth of garbage at the cost of $1940.
I called to get insurance on the house. This is a different type of insurance for an unhabitable house. The policy covers fire & liability only. It’s going to cost around $700.
Boy the costs are piling up fast!

Holy cow! Your dumpster costs seem high. We shopped around… 30 yard x 2 dumps for the initial site prep: just under $600 total, including the city’s permit fee. Plus 3 guys two half-days to clean out junk ($12/hr + pizza = $350, via Craigslist).
Through the course of the project, we’ve had to get some smaller dumpsters, too.
The costs certainly add up. We’re about 3.5 months and $60k into our fixer, but starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Yeah, the costs seemed a little high to me. We called around and dumpsters seem to cost more here than I’m used to. They had $70 drop off fee and $130 pick up fee and something like $50 a ton? Then we paid labor costs, probably too many people but they finished the clean up in 2 days.
