To do or not to do?

May 2nd, 2007 by Kenric

The new house that I live in has a whole bunch of overgrown landscaping.  It’s not difficult work to cut and trim the landscaping but it is alot of work.  I have 1/3 acre and it’s overgrown.  It’s like a forest!  So I got a few quotes today and they are around $1,000!  They all say its 2 days of work.

Being a do it yourselfer, I’m pretty sure I can cut grass and trim bushes and trees.  However I don’t have any power tools for that yet.  So I’m debating whether I should buy a lawnmower, chainsaw and hedge trimmer and do the work myself.  Since I’m not working, I can’t really justify spending $1000 for something that I can do.

I figure I’d spend around $150 for the tools and then I’d have to spend maybe $100 to rent a wood chipper.  I wouldn’t buy a lawnmower just yet.  I may hire that part out since it should only be $25 a week.  Disposing of landscaping material is a big headache if you try to fit it into garbage cans.  I don’t even know what I’d do with the chipped wood.  Sell it as mulch?

So I would save $750, but then I would have the tools also.

  2. If it’s that much money, buy your own tools and do it. Keep looking though, you maybe able to find someone who wants the weekly job, so they may offer a good deal.
