Time to vent

September 10th, 2008 by Kenric

Again, I apologize for sporatic posts on here.  I’m getting sick of staring at my monitor all day.  So I’d like to vent a little frustration out about things that have been happening.

First, I got a nice letter from Countrywide notifying me about their security breach and that my information could have been in there.  So I called the credit agencies and put an alert on my credit.  I guess I’ll sign up for the free 2 year protection program that they are paying for.

Second, a fridge went out at one of my rentals.  Sent the repair man over to fix it and paid $300.  Two days later, the tenant calls and says the fridge still isn’t working.  Repair man went over again and said they forget to change some setting.  Keeping fingers crossed that it’s fixed.

Third, these developers in India are driving me crazy with lack of common sense.  This is what happens when you get people who understand coding, databases and technical mumbo jumbo, but they have never ever surfed the internet in their life.

Some of the questions I get are sooooo stupid.  Yes, there is such thing as a stupid question.  Yesterday I had to explain aspect ratios of videos to them.  Suppose I had a video that is 500×500 pixels.  The video should look square right with black bars on the sides?  When it goes to full screen on my monitor which is not square, the whole video stretches to the left and right edges.  So the content of the video is super distorted.  They couldn’t understand this.  They basically said you wanted full screen and the video is on the FULL SCREEN.  Ummm, yes I want my website to stream retarded looking video.

Third 1/2, these developers in India are driving me crazy (different company).  My new ebiz site looked great in Firefox but not so good in Internet Explorer.  I tell him I can’t launch like that.  The guy says to me Firefox is more popular browser right?   Seriously, do they even look at stats?  My site is runng 66% IE and 30% FF.

Priceless IM – jxxxxx (9/6/2008 11:46:51 AM): according to client all ppls use FF in USA

Third 3/4, these developers are beginning to ask me to review their new website designs because I think they determined that I actually have taste, know what’s not cheezy and surf the web all day.  They send me screen shots and ask, how does this look?  I know I don’t have to answer them, but they need help!  I feel like I’m teaching class on web 2.0. and ecommerce strategy through IM.

More priceless IM

jxxxxxx (9/4/2008 11:38:26 PM): thank you sir, for your time to feedback it. I will your feedback to our designers to implement it.
jxxxxxx (9/4/2008 11:38:59 PM): do you suggest any good font to use here?
jxxxxxx (9/4/2008 11:41:15 PM): you suggest any font that will work better
jxxxxxx (9/4/2008 11:41:28 PM): I mean name of that font
Kenric H (9/4/2008 11:41:30 PM): i will have to look through my fonts
jxxxxxx (9/4/2008 11:42:02 PM): ok please try to look later whenever you have time if you can
Kenric H (9/4/2008 11:45:20 PM): How about Garamond
jxxxxxx (9/4/2008 11:45:59 PM): what do it look like
(insert what I should have replied with)
Kenric H (9/4/2008 11:45:20 PM): Open up f*in Word and see for your f’in self.  How am I suppose to describe a f*in font to you over IM.

I’m charging them money next time…  But really I wasn’t mad I was just amazed and sort of sad at their lack of common sense.

Fourth, I got a new computer a few weeks ago and having been running MS Vista since.  What a freaking pain.  How do you make something that is worse than what you had before?  I got a more powerful computer chip and RAM wise, but its slower than my 3 year old laptop.

End rant post of the week.

  2. Awesome post. I was cracking up when you explained your website building process. Classic. Keep it up.

  3. In my research, doing business with people from across the pond, I’m finding more and more discontent. They may be cheaper but the quality isn’t there. And an inordinate amount of hand-holding.

But I don’t blame you. I would definitely charge them for your input. Especially since they have already played the “according to the client” BS.

    I’m so glad I don’t have Vista.

  4. Hilarious.. I had to work with some outsourced indian people at my last job. They always say stuff like “i have doubt about this sir!” And the Firefox vs. IE thing is hilarious, too because most developers like to use Firefox but most clients use IE.

  5. Your number three’s were funny. I hope your next few days go better and that you don’t have to do as much hand holding.

  6. Clifford, I thought about going local, but sometimes all you are paying for is a project manager. Many companies here basically outsource to India, so you basically yell at the USA developer leader in Cali, who calls up India and yells at them there. I’m just cutting out the middleman.

I would suggest that if you don’t know what you want you may need to have the middleman. Fortunately, I can speak developer.

I would still go overseas just because the price difference is huge. They will eventually get it right, you just have to show them how.
