Tiling my new patio
May 4th, 2007 by KenricIn keeping with my ”keep it simple, stupid” method of tiling, I measured the area and went to Home Depot to determine which size tile would require the least cuts. It turns out that 16×16 inch tile would fit perfectly.
I did not use the pre-mixed mortar this time because I needed alot and it would not have been cost effective. TIP: When you mix mortar always keep a little mortar left in case you make your mix too wet. If it’s too dry, you can always add water. If it’s too wet and you have no mortar left, you’re screwed.
I had to make 8 total cuts on this patio. Every other piece fit in perfectly. Total cost $194 and 6 hours of work time.

Good call on your part. The new tiles are significantly better than the old.

Not only that, but it’s also a sunny day and Ken is wearing a vibrant blue shirt in the after picture. There’s even a cute pooch there. It’s almost like an advertisement. haha

It’s always sunny in Phoenix! I’ll try to get a picture of a cloudy day in Phoenix to post.

I have a dumb question for you. I would love to do something like that to our back patio–but, do the tiles or the grout crack during icy winters? Does Phoenix have icy winters? Duh, no, probably not.

I have no idea about the icy winters. I don’t think they would crack. Maybe you can tile a small part and see.
The one thing I’d worry about is how slippery the tiles would be in the winter. The ones I put it get slipperly when wet.
