Sometimes I wonder about our banking system
September 6th, 2007 by KenricThe next day, there are 3 more debit card charges on the account. Another from Bed Bath Beyond in North Carolina and two from Safeway in Denver. Again, they are all pending charges. I call them again. Hello???? I am 100% sure that I did not make these charges. Did I really shop in 3 states in two days? Again, the lady says that there is nothing they can do because the charges are only pending. Someone is using a debit card that I don’t have. Finally, the lady says that they can cancel the debit card so it won’t work. What debit card??
Day three comes. The Bed Bath and Beyond charges don’t post, but the two Safeway charges do for about $500. Now it’s official! Someone used a debit card I don’t have to buy $500 worth of groceries in Denver. I call the bank, fill out a nice form and fax it back. The money will be going back into my account. The bank just lost $500 due to their system of “I can’t doing anything about it until your money is gone.”

That is just plain ridiculous. You are right on top of it and the bank is not doing anything about it until the money is actually gone!

A similar situation happened with my checking account. Only the “pending transactions” occurred within a day. All along the 95 freeway in Florida.
It sounds like your bank’s CSR has a case of the Mondays.

Do you scan your computer daily for viruses and malware? How do you connect to the internet? Do you have a firewall? Do you use IE or something else to browse the web? It sounds like your computer is not very secure.

I went to a local cafe once and used my debit card for our purchase. A few days later, I noticed that there was an additional charge directly after the first charge at that cafe for about $30. I went back to the cafe to ask for a refund. They didn’t believe that the $30 charge wasn’t mine. So, I brought a bank statement in to show them that the charge just prior to that $30 was our legitimate purchase–not the $30 one. They refused to refund the money. So, I went to my bank, believing the whole “check card, no liability” thing they’d been advertising. They said there was nothing they could do and refused to refund the charge, too! I cancelled the debit card and only use credit cards now. My credit card companies bend over backwards to refund something bogus. And, I have never been back to that cafe.

I had a similar situation with charges to 4 different airlines in India which totaled about $900. I saw the pending charges and told them that I am not in India and have never been to India, but they just let those charges go through even when they have been told in advance. I was credited all the charges but it took about 5 phone calls and 4 months to get it resolved
