Name brand irony

0416655211096_275x275.jpgWhy is it that people who aren’t wealthy try to look wealthy but people who are do the opposite?

I’ve noticed that many of my female friends like to buy expensive name brand or designer clothes or accessories.  Most of them have at least one Prada purse.  My friends who are not wealthy always buy the real deal. If its not real they don’t want it.  Personally, I can’t tell the difference.  I think the reason that it has to be real is because their girlfriends will closely examine any new and exciting purchase and can instantly tell if it’s not real.  So that’s why you have to spend $800 on a purse!

The irony is that I have a friend who is worth millions.  She and her family have alot of money, but all her Prada purses are fake.  I asked her why she didn’t get the real deal.  She said that the reason is because everyone assumes that they are real anyway.  Nobody would question that this girl who lives in a $6 million house would have a $75 fake Prada purse.  The only way I knew it was a fake was because I actually have some “Spotting fake Prada training”.

In fact, I have a fake Prada laptop bag which was given to me by my brother who got it Taiwan.  I use it like any other bag, I don’t take care of it too well.  A bag is meant to be a bag.  If I can’t get it wet or put it on the ground what good is it?  The first day I brought it into work I knew it was a mistake.  “You got a Prada bag for your computer?  They pay you too much here.”  Then there was the Derek Zoolander co-worker, “Let me see it, it’s not real… I bet it’s fake”, who looked it over for five minutes and then proclaimed that it was indeed real which made the other co-workers talk about it even more.  Then later on a snowy day.  Some girl stared in disbelief when placed my bag down in the dirty snow.  How dare he!! Blasphemy!

I still have this bag… it’s in my closet.  I should give it to some deserving wealthy girl!

  2. It is quite ironic that people like to portray themselves as rich when they aren’t. I guess it makes them feel “important” or something. You can see examples everywhere, too. Like those low riders who spend $1,000′s on custom wheels or paint jobs for their cars and live in a trash pile. Or this one person I know who just HAD to get one of those H2 Hummers when it came out.

  3. Selling to the Affluent calls people who are not rich but consume to look as though they are, the ones “who desire to aspire”. Huge market.

  4. With guys, I see them buying a BMW and then putting an “M” badge on it, or a Mercedes and adding a “AMG” badge. The funny thing about this is that people who know what the badges mean know that the car is a fake and people who don’t know anything about it won’t be impressed cause they don’t know anything about it. But the biggest downfall is that the performance isn’t up to par with a real ones so when you have to show the goods you can’t.

  5. - K, I think you wrote this post just to elicit a response from me ; ) While I see the irony in a person who owns a very expensive designer bag w/matching wallet who can’t afford to buy lunch off McDonald’s menu and the millionaress next door with a fake designer bag, I have this to say. In defense of some of your female friends, if they choose to spend their money on such items, at least they can afford to. They may not be wealthy but most have the disposable income to do with what they like. I, probably like you, would prefer since they have the extra money, to see them invest just half of the money they spend on Prada on real estate or the market. In response to your opening question – perhaps wealthy people don’t need a designer bag to remind them of their fat bank accounts. btw – didn’t we talk about giving that bag to me?

  6. No I didn’t write it for you. I didn’t even know you owned a Prada bag. :) If you want the laptop bag… it’s all yours.

  7. I used to live in a small city where the hottest brand purse you could find was Coach. $100 maybe? Nobody had a Coach purse. If they did, they were viewed as a snob who didn’t deserve it and everyone gossiped about how they probably couldn’t afford it. “Having” meant you were ridiculed. People didn’t care much about brands I think due to a lack of availability and awareness. Now that I’m in Phoenix, availability is everywhere and I see a lot more “keeping up with the Joneses” going on. I can see how if you grew up around all of the stores and material goods it would be tempting to want more doodads. Me? I own one purse. I get a new one about every 2 years and I try to keep it to $20. Mine right now has a Ralph Lauren logo on it. I suppose for $20 that must mean it’s not real? LOL!
