My furniture update

August 26th, 2008 by Kenric

On August 1st, I bought a whole new living room set and got a second set for $1.  I got my furniture delivered on August 8th and have had a little difficulty in selling it.  I had set my prices high and have been slowly lowering it to get interest.

I finally sold the coffee table and the end table last weekend for $325.  So now I have the sofa, ottoman and 1.5 chair left.  I think that the people on craigslist want cheaper used items rather than new items heavily discounted.  I think that I’m going to take the word “NEW” out of my listing if I don’t get more calls.

My goal was to pay $1,400 for a whole living room set when I made this purchase.  I have spent $3,100 and got back $325.  $2,775-$1,400 = $1,375.  It should be noted that I need to add $100 in taxes to calculations, so basically I need to sell my remaining items for about $1,475 to reach my goal.

I think I can get that for the 3 pieces I have left below.

  2. I sell stuff on craiglist all the time. WIth furniture there are usually a TON of listings. Some tips that have helped me are:
    * list things on thursdays before the 1st and the 15th (pay days)
    * put the store (or similar stores) where you purchased them from in the ads (also if you put anything with ikea in the ad–including better quality than ikea that seems to get more hits)–like Google SEO think about the words people might search for when looking through ads
    * and don’t lower your price too much, sometimes it takes a while to find the right buyer (I just relist my stuff every Thursday, it takes me about 3 months usually to sell a piece of furniture)

    Hope that helps!

  3. I was just thinking about this post the other day when I was walking through the furniture section at Macy’s. I look forward to seeing how you do with the rest of the set. Good Luck!

  4. Seems you like classic style furniture. Recently people prefer with minimalist style. But, I admit that your choice look very cozy.
