Minding your own business at night

January 19th, 2007 by Kenric

Sometimes I feel guilty when I come home from work, just turn on the TV for 4 hours, go to sleep and then wake up and go back to work the next morning.  I feel guilty because  I did not do anything to further the course of my investments during the night.  I did not read any real estate articles, look at any listings, run calculations, call a listing, etc…

Millions of people just go to work, relax at home and do nothing further financially.  They are perfectly content with that lifestyle.  I used to be that way 5 years ago.  For some reason, work money does not satisfy me anymore.  I feel guilty that night for not accomplishing anything financially in addition to my job.

As readers of this blog, do you all have this same feeling?  No longer is working your daily job enough to satisify you.  You want to accomplish more.

  2. Every single day. Fortunately, I’ve learned I can do something about it. Cutting out the “4 hours of tv” dramatically helped out.

  3. Hello,
Sorry to go off topic, but are you planning on going to Arizona get together this year?

  4. Hi Brenton, yeah I’m going. It’ll be good to see you guys again.

  5. I know exactly how you feel.

Just relaxing 2 hours and I feel gulty too. Even in the weekends. I actually have to force myself to relax and then often I feel guilty for just doing that.

Any of you guys have any good ways of dealing with that? Because obviously thats not good either. One needs to relax too.

  6. Michael,

I don’t have an answer for you. But sometimes I just go spend some money. :-)

  7. Actually, you need to relax and take a breather every so often. It’s like telling a dieter they have to drink water and eat rice cakes ONLY. From what I’ve read, most professional people incorporate relaxation into their schedule, whether it be spiritual meditation, yoga, exercise, a round of golf, reading about something other than business/REI/stocks/etc.

  8. I try to keep my life well balanced, but find that I sometimes forget about friends and family. I try to make a concerted effort to spend time with my wife and dogs each night and give them the attention they need.

Helps keep me grounded on why I’m doing what I’m doing. Sometimes its easy to let the “chase” take over your life.

  9. I felt that way about a W-2 job last June. I told myself I would quit in 6 months and invest full time. I guess they read my mind (doesn’t help when I bring RE books to read at my SLOW job) and they let me go. What a blessing. I now invest full time and build my knowledge and self confidence through various literature. Now I’m looking for win-win partnerships with like minded people.

I’m in San Diego and invest here and out of state.

  10. I feel guilty for not working on my “day job” hard enough and trading instead :)

  11. I think the answer lies in just stepping out to take action- something to keep you accountable so you don;t have time to sit around. First the need- then the means.

  12. I know exactly what you mean. It is strange to read someone else describe it, because that is exactly how I feel. There is so much to accomplish whether it be for my GolfersWired.com business, my real estate portfolio, or any other investments that if I come home and don’t do anything I feel incredibly guilty. Although I have found that at times it is necessary to do so. I sometimes get completely exhausted and then only at that point I commit to relaxing for an entire night.

  13. pr, you’re a hoot. Like you ever slow down, girl!

I figure I’ll rest when I’m dead. Til then, there are too many interesting things to do. None of them require watching hours of tv (I prefer to live life, not watch it).

  14. Monday night TV wastes 3 hours for me. Can’t help it… 24, Prison Break and Heroes! That’s my worst night, not much on on other nights.

That said, I’ve been running around these past few days looking at some much property that I didn’t feel guilty watching 3 hrs of TV.
