Is blogging passive income?

April 25th, 2007 by Kenric

I read alot of blogs about many different topics.  The blogs about making money online and personal finance seem to have the highest readerships in the money realm.  I have not found that real estate investing blogs seem to generate alot of readership.  I think that is because our targeted audience is relatively small compared to the millions out there who want to learn how to make money online or just manage their finances.

The subtitle of my blog is Living Life to its Fullest by Generating Passive Income through Investments.  When I started this blog three years ago I didn’t do it to make money.  In fact, I had no idea that blogs made money.  However, in the past year as I’ve steadily become exposed to how people make money online and have implemented various things into this blog while still keeping it focused on real estate.

So now that this blog is generating a little money, the question becomes “Is blogging passive income?”

You could argue that your past posts can earn you money just by being there for people to read.  If the post you made yesterday continues to generate views forever and therefore money, isn’t it passive income?

However, if you stop making posts, your blog traffic will quickly drop and die along with the money.  So without being active, your income will stop.

Now the big test is, “Am I being paid based on my time spent blogging?”  The answer is clearly NO here.  I am investing time in writing a post, in return the post may or may not generate income.  I am not getting paid $5 per post.  There is no time element in determining my income from my blog.

Therefore, I’d say that blogging passive income. While it does require everyday maintenance, it’s not a far reach to say that you some element to maintain on your real estate investments daily also.

I probably spend about 30 minutes a day writing on here.  My content flows pretty easily because I just write what’s on my mind.  Many of you would argue that I’m wrong because my blog makes a measly $100/mo and I spend 15 hours a month writing.  That translates to $6.60/hr.  But it’s not the most recent post that is bringing in the money.  If my blog made $5 yesterday, can you say that it was due to yesterday’s post about the Tucson fixer upper?  No, it was my blog as a whole that generated the $5.

So if I consider a blog income passive, the next question is “Is a blog an investment?”

  2. I would start with defining passive income….. I am striving to be able to simply take off for a month, or two, or five with NO obligations… and still have my income flowing into my checking account. Blogging is a daily thing…. If you don’t blog, it doesn’t flow. So, for me – Blogging is not passive. It does not free you from the need to work… It is more like self employed income.
