I’m a loser and a bum

November 6th, 2007 by Kenric

On Sunday, I did absolutely nothing.  I woke up too early cause I forgot about daylight savings time for the rest of the country and was expecting the Fox pregame show at 9am.  Well, it starts at 10am now.  So I watched an infomercial on buying land until 10am.  Then I managed to watch the Fox pregame, the Arizona Cardinals game and the Pats vs. Colts game until 5pm.  Then I went out and got some fast food dinner, came home, messed around on the computer, played poker online and watched TV until midnight.

Isn’t the person who sleeps, eats and watches TV, lays on the couch and has no job is called a loser or bum?  That was me on Sunday.

But what if instead I did the following.  Woke up, watched the Fox pregame show, watched the Arizona Cardinals game, went to work for 6 hours, got some fast food dinner, messed around on the computer, played poker online and watched TV until midnight.

It’s ironic that this would now be called a productive day.  The only difference was that I went to work for 6 hours.  Why does making money for the duration of 6 hours make a day more productive?  Would I have felt like less of a bum when I got home?

The reason I’m making this post is that on Sunday I was thinking about how long my work days used to be in Chicago.  I would wake up at 6:30am and get home at 6:30pm everyday like clockwork.  I spent 12 hours a day on work stuff.  Not once did anyone ever tell me that I was a bum for spending 12 hours a day on work.

A few years ago, while I was visiting a friend in Denver, I woke up and left home at the same time as she did.  She drove to work, I drove 3 hours into the mountains, rode my bike for 4 hours, drove back and I got home before she did.  I remember thinking that she sat in a cube for 9 hours and I rode up a mountain.  I really think that this is where I started thinking that spending time at work was being a bum or loser and that a day at work shouldn’t automatically be considered a productive day.

Productive days should be days where you feel fulfilled at the end of the day.  You should have a sense of accomplishment.  These days can be anything, a day at work where you closed some deals, a day on vacation where you saw everything you wanted to see, a day working on the house at home, etc…

Let’s take moving day.  You loaded the truck, you moved, you unloaded the truck, you unpacked everything, filled the cabinets and put away your clothes.  At the end of the day when you finally hopped onto your bed and were exhausted you thought to yourself, “what a long day, I can’t believe we got so much done.”  Now, that’s a productive and satisfying day.

  2. I’ve been really enjoying construction on our House 17! I feel much more at peace. I have a sense of serenity and accomplishment at the end of the day. And, most of all, I like being able to admire the results of my labor. It’s really amazing and rewarding to someone who has spent so much time behind a desk for the last several years!
