Getting back into the swing of things

October 14th, 2009 by Kenric

Ok, I’m going to try to regularly post to my blog.  Instead of a post with a bunch of topics, I’ll try to make timely smaller posts.

So today I’m going to talk about my mini websites with a few pages and my plans for them.

Ever since I took that advanced SEO class two months ago (I just realized I forgot to post about this), I’ve been trying different strategies for my sites.  One of them was to create other sites that are within or related to my niche and basically build up an inventory of sites. Here are some of its benefits:

  • Inbound links from related sites
  • Gather up a portfolio of good domains
  • Create income generating sites

So I set a goal to create one website a day.  It sounds pretty expensive because 365 days means 365 domains at $9 a domain equals $3285/yr on just domains!  However, the one cardinal rule of doing this is that each website must stand by itself.  This means that each site must make at least $9/yr.

For example, I purchased a good 3 word domain on September 14th.  Built a site around it with good content.  Within one week it was #1 on Google for its 3 word search term.  The site gets 15-20 hits a day and makes about $1 a week.  This site has made $7 so far.  This is a good site.

Not all are good.  I bought 6 similar domains a month ago and one has made $0.  Of the 6 domains I purchased they have made a total of $12 as of today.  I only need them to make $54 to break even.

  3. What is the ultimate purpose of these sites anyway?

  4. The purpose of these sites is to build your base of relevant sites. At some point you are going to run out to sites to link to your main site and you will also hit a link wall. Imagine having 5,000 links. What’s another set of 100 links going to do? Probably not much. Instead take those 100 links and send them to your other sites. They will boost your other site’s stats and PR and ultimately boost your main site because these sites are linking to them.
