Finding Value on a Property
October 2nd, 2006 by Kenric
Last weekend I was with my friend looking at some properties. We were contemplating a fixer upper house and talking about what the spread was and how much work needed to be done.
As we were leaving I noticed that this property had a bunch of Saguaro cacti in the front lawn. A few of these were about 12 feet tall. Saguaro cacti are endangered and protected. Harming one in any manner is illegal by state law in Arizona.
Two years ago I met someone who owned a cacti transplanting company. He worked for a major builder and whenever a builder was clearing land for new subdivisions he was called to remove the cacti. He would bring them to his land and replant them and resell them to homeowners, builders and nurseries for big bucks. A 12 foot Saguaro could go for up to $2,000 depending on its symmetry and arms. Anyway, I mentioned this to my friend and we did a quick inventory and figured that this home had about $5,000 retail worth of cacti on the property. Mo Money, Mo money, Mo money…
