Dot Asia (.asia) domain auction experience
June 1st, 2008 by KenricI tried to get about 50 .asia domain names back in March. All of my domain names went to auction so I thought I’d write about how the dot asia domain name process works and go through a simple auction. Basically, if more than one person registered for the domain name that you wanted the domain name goes to auction.
After you are informed that your domain is going to auction, you have to wait for the auction to get scheduled. In my case I’ve had around 10 of my 50 domains scheduled for auction so far. I have won 1 auction, lost 2 auctions, am currently top bidder for 3 and not even trying to bid for the others.
The auctions are being held at dotasia.pool.com. Below is a screen shot of the auction page. You can see that promotion.asia is currently at $17,100 with 46 bids. There is 20 hours left on the auction. One thing about this auction is that once a new higher bid has been placed the auction automatically extends for another 24 hours. There is no last minute sniping of these domain names.

If you click on the # of bids, you can see a list of bidders who are bidding for the name. The auctions work pretty much like Ebay’s auctions. The biggest difference is that only people who tried to register for that name back in March can bid. Therefore the number of bidders bidding is limited.

You can also click on a link to see how many participants there are in each auction. In the case of promotion.asia there are 43 participants in the auction. Sometimes you get lucky. This short one word domain name below only has 5 participants including me. I have a good chance of winning this one at a low price. I’m hoping that the other bidders don’t even bid.

The one domain name I’ve won so far was $75. It’s not a common single word domain but it is a very common asian last name and it’s also my last name. I had a chance to get my last name .org about 10 years ago and decided not to. But I actually think that my last name.asia is even better since it is an asian last name.

Actually, those .asia names suck, Allan. Your prices are laughable.
