Do you have to hang up when “texting?”

Today, I was texting with a friend but then I got to the park and went to play basketball.  I left the phone in the car and when I came back two hours later I had 3 text messages.  Apparently, my friend was still continuing the conversation.  So, I picked up the phone and continued texting but she was no longer answering, probably asleep.

What is the proper etiquette when texting?  When IM’ing it’s pretty easy to type “gotta go” or “later” so the other person knows the conversation is over.  But when you’re texting, how do you end the conversation?

Sometimes I’ll text a message and put down the phone.  The message was meant to be an FYI message, not the start of a conversation.  But then the person responds and I don’t get the text until 2 hours later.  Is that wrong?

Or sometimes you are texting back and forth and one person just stops.  Personally, I think it’s fine.  If the topic was important then you should be talking, not typing.

I’ve never sent a text that said, “ttyl” or “bye” or “gotta go.”  Do you guys say “bye” or “hang up” when texting?
