The problem with carpet clleaning is similar to the problem with pools. Carpet cleaners never remove the soap. The soap attracts dirt and deteriorates the carpet fiber and backing. The carpets have to be cleaned more often and they stretch. After a few cleanings and restretchings, the carpet can no longer be cleaned or restretched. The result is a wear life in rentals of about five to seven years.

You can drain your pool and start over. You can also upgrade your filtration. The problem with all the chemicals is that it is hard to maintain pH and keep deposits off the tile. Eventually the plaster develops "cancer" and you have to replaster.

Older plasters have asbestos and are harder to destroy. I have seen some 40 year old pools with original plasters that do not need to be replastered. Replasters consist primarily of calcium carbonate, are very sensitive to pH and have short lives if not maintained.
