Camping in Havasupai Canyon
April 16th, 2008 by KenricHavasupai Canyon is one of those places that I’ve been wanting to go for about 3 years now. When I first saw pictures of it, I could not believe that these waterfalls were located in Arizona. So tomorrow I am taking the trip to Havasupai Canyon and going on my first ever backpacking camping trip.
I’ve done car camping before where you just drive up to your campsite. That’s easy camping, no need to worry about forgeting things. But this backpacking camping is new to me. Now I have to plan well and prepare to bring everything that I need for 3 days. I’m used to driving to the general store from the campsite everytime we forget something.

Above is a map of the trip. We drive to the Hualapai Hilltop and from there we begin the descent into the canyon. The hike is 10 miles to the campground.
There are many waterfalls in Havasupai Canyon but I only plan to visit the 3 main ones.
Below are photos of 2 of the waterfalls. I grabbed these off other people’s websites but I plan to have my own photos real soon.

I was packing and laying out my stuff tonight and decided to take the picture below. This was to document what I was taking and also an exercise in double checking my inventory. So this is all that I’m taking (clothes not shown) for the next 3 days. I have no idea how much food I’ll eat so I’m overpacking the food. Since two days will be spent hiking, there is really only time to cook 5 meals.
Oh I more thing, I don’t plan on carrying all of this stuff on the hike. I was going to and its certainly light enough to carry. But I found out that you can hire a horse/mule to carry your stuff for you so why not? We split a horse 4 ways so its only costing $45 for a horse to carry your stuff both ways! That’s a bargain and yes I’m a wuss.
Thanks to my brother who sent me this kick ass high end equipment, you would not believe that the photo below includes a, 2 person tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mattress, propane stove, face towel and bath towel, one rain jacket, one lightweight jacket, arm and leg warmers, 3 led flashlights, a hand crank USB charger (for the GPS) and much more! And I can stuff it most of it into that backpack on the left.

Beautifull waterfall…I’m waiting to see your own waterfall photos.

Have fun on your trip!! I love backpacking. I used to do it all the time as a kid. I haven’t done it in a while, since my kids were pretty little, but they are old enough now to start doing it again. We are going to backpack a portion of the continental divide this summer. Looking forward to hearing how your trip goes!
