A trick to find empty parking spaces
February 27th, 2008 by KenricI always thought that everyone did this but I found out that most people actually look at the cars down the row when looking for an empty parking spot. I don’t know where I picked this up but I’ve been doing it ever since I can remember. I can find empty parking spaces at a quick glance down an entire row of spaces. If I don’t see a possibility I drive to the next row.
(These pictures were taken from my cell phone camera so I apologize for the quality)
You drive slowly looking down the row of cars for an empty parking space. A quick glance should tell you if there is a spot available. Can you see the empty spot in this picture below?

No? Here’s the answer.

It’s so obvious now isn’t it? You don’t look at the cars, you look at the shadows. Notice a break in them?
Here’s a closer look. It’s more obvious now.

Now there is always the chance that there’s a motorcycle parked there or a Mini Cooper pulled up so far that it fails to make a shadow or is a shopping cart return spot. After some practice you can spot those right away too. This actually works in covered parking garages if they have decent lighting.
Here’s your final exam. Where is the empty parking spot in this picture? I see two possibilities in that picture. Pretty easy to find now isn’t it.

Happy Parking!

I thought everyone did this?!? ;)

It’s a nice trick Kenrick…But, I am wondering if this trick working at night, especially with minimum lighting?
