Havasu Campground flooding
August 18th, 2008 by KenricLast April I went to Havasu Falls for a weekend camping trip. Heavy rains and a dam break resulted in the flooding of the Havasu campgrounds and the village of Supai. The article say that people camping woke up at 2am to see the waters near their tent. Many campers were evacuated by helicopter.
Look at the muddy water pouring into the canyon a vast difference from the clear blue water from when I was there.

Wow! I had no idea. Talk about a major adventure for those people…

We were also there in April with the kids. And have photos much like yours. Apparently two tribal members ran through the campground in the evening warning people that a flood was eminent, but no one took them seriously. No one was hurt, which really is a miracle when you consider how close the tents are to the river. I wonder how much of the travertine was destroyed from this flood?

That would not be a fun way to end a vacation but definitely a memorable one.
