GSD
January 7th, 2008 by KenricNo it doesn’t stand for German Sheperd Dog. It stands for Get Shit Done. When I used to work in the corporate world I used to use the term GSD alot. It basically meant to just do it now instead of later. I couldn’t stand how we would sit in meetings and talk about something that needed to be done when we could have just done it during the meeting.
Lately, I’ve realized that I have become one of those do it later people. I have been meaning to change my voicemail greeting on my ebiz message. I put it down as something to do on Monday, but as I was writing it down on a notepad I decided to just get it done. There are so many little things like that that we can just do at the moment we think about them. I need to get back into the habit of just doing it.
(one hour has passed since I wrote the top portion of this post)
What happened? Well while writing this post a bunch of things popped into my head that I’ve been putting off. I had two choices, do them now or finish this post and do them after. It’s ironic because I was talking about getting things done and here I am not finishing this post. However, I had to decide which was more important to complete. This unfinished post could wait since it wasn’t being posted until tomorrow. So I finished a bunch of stuff that I was going to put off until tomorrow instead. The net result is that once I finish this post my list of things to do tomorrow is empty now.
How many times have you looked at a bill and thought, I have to remember to pay that tomorrow? Why can’t you just do it at that moment? I’m sure you have 2 minutes to spare. What are the chances that you’ll forget to pay it tomorrow if you don’t write it down? Isn’t writing it down almost as much work as writing a check and addressing an envelope?

<y first thought was Gesundheit!

Agreed. Those meetings used to drive me crazy. In big companies, though, they teach you to make the lists. They hold classes on it.

Hi Kenric,
I am guilty of doing the exact same thing, and get very frustrated with myself because of it. Sometimes it is just little things, like cleaning my car or making a phone call, but I will keep putting it off and putting it off.
One of my goals for 2008 is to be less of a procrastinator, and more of a “Get Shit Doner.”
