First day of my new job… sort of
July 13th, 2007 by KenricI began volunteering for a cooking school yesterday. I no longer volunteer at the zoo because I moved 50 miles away from it. One of my huge weaknesses is cooking. I’ve taken a few cooking classes in the past and was thinking about taking some more or even enrolling in a culinary program at the local community college.
So when I saw that a local cooking school was looking for volunteers I thought it’d be perfect for me. I applied last month and finally began yesterday. I basically prepare the food and set out all the ingredients and utensils that the students need prior to class. During class, I listen to the chef teach and explain the dishes and help students locate whatever they need. When class is over, I wash dishes and clean the mess that the students left.
The kicker is that I actually get paid to do this. So I guess it’s technically not volunteering, it’s really a part time job. The reason for the payment is due to liability issues with the school. I have to be an employee to be covered by their insurance.
