Categories and categories
December 27th, 2007 by KenricI hate the number of categories that my blog has. As an engineer I like things in a certain organization and clean order. Simple categories just seems like an easy way to do it. However, it’s just gotten out of hand. I’m going to parse down the number of categories on this blog down to 10 or 12.
My original thought was to have only 3 categories:
- Live
- Learn
- Invest
But I felt that this was way too general. Each category would have 200 posts making them useless. But it would have been nice to be able to match the site name with those categories.
This is basically a rant post right now as I haven’t thought this through but I’m thinking that my categories will become something like this:
- Real estate (the whole USA)
- Making money online (blogging, affiliates, adsense, SEO)
- Financial stuff (taxes, savings, investing non real estate, IRA, stocks, options)
- General Info (rants, miscellaneous posts)
- Online gambling
These are general categories for single posts that stand alone.
Then I’d have more categories like:
- Texas Apartment 1
- Ebiz 1
- Ebiz 2
- Tucson Fixer
- $1 to $1000 poker
What I’d like to do is have categories for specific projects. It’s almost like a mini-series. For example, my poker $1 to $1000 would be easy to follow for someone who doesn’t care about ebiz or real estate investing. They could follow those posts easily by searching through its category.
BTW, if anyone knows an easy way to edit categories without going to each post, please let me know.

As a marketing guy, I would say there is value in the “Live Learn Invest” brand name. Perhaps you could put the categories under each one of these headings.

Whoops, it submitted before I was done.
Live:
- Vacation
- Saving Money
- Health & Fitness
- Career
Learn:
- $1 to $1000
- Kitchen Tile Backsplashes
- Personal Development
- Gambling
- Ebiz
Invest:
- Apartments
- Stocks
- Mortgages
Additionally, i would reduce the number of subcategories down to three or so if possible and regardless of how much work it is, I would tag all your good historical posts so they are easy to find for new readers. There are so many blogs out there I just avoid because they are so hard to sort through…
Happy Holidays!

RealOG,
That sounds like a plan. I may have to use tags instead of categories so I’ll have to upgrade my wordpress version.
