Are the Lexus Christmas commercials financially responsible?

November 26th, 2006 by Kenric

Lexus has been running commercials where the people are given Lexus cars for Christmas.  In all these commercials the people receiving the car are always suprised.  One particular ad shows a new Lexus with a red bow parked on the street in between two driveways.  The husbands of both houses are looking at it and both and hoping that it’s for them.  This got me thinking, are there couples that would actually do this?  They would make a $40,000 purchase without telling the other?  Is getting a Lexus for Christmas a good thing or a sign of financial irresponsibility in the relationship?

If this happened to me, I’d be sort of shocked.  My first thought would be “I hope she won the lottery and didn’t tell me”.  But all financials remaining the same, I would be saying, “You did what?!  Are you crazy?  You spent how much without consulting with me first?”  In most households, I don’t think it would be the happy Christmas Day as the commercials make it out to be.

  2. I have seen those commercials and thought the same thing. My guess is that they are targeting people that might eventually start a lease for Christmas. This way, it only takes $5000 or so to place that Lexis in your driveway. Of course the $500/month lease doesn’t come due until Feb. 1, and many people can rationalize that future obligation away.

  5. The new commercial has the wives come out and try to each claim it as their own.

These commercials are targeting the over leveraged american consumers, which is like shooting 50+ bullets at unarmed men walking out of a New York club.

The more I see something advertised, the less I am inclined to respond to the advertisement. I can’t bare the thought of paying the price markup on products because of all the advertisement.

  6. Perhaps their target demographic is richer than we’d like to think? Or, they were aiming for something funny and missed the mark.

  7. It would be interesting to see if their sales or leases are up in December compared to October, November.

  8. I haven’t seen it but they probably just want to create a fantasy in people’s minds to make Lexus seem more desirable.

There are people who buy expensive cars as surprise presents but probably not enough to be worth targeting with a TV ad…

  9. They are definietly targeting the gay/lesb group. As a 2-Lexus owner, I’ll be buying chic trendy BMW’s from now on

  11. They are targetting either irresponsible consumer/ couples or the ones who would not care in terms of their earnings being 20 times cost of such purchase or very high net worth. my feel is we have ample couples in former category. i do not have a problem in Lexus targetting them as in my view largest market for lexus is this precise segment. To be more precise more irresponsible couples or people buy luxury car than responsible ones or who value savings. So Lexus knows how to call on instant gratification emotions of these couples mindset. fool and money can not stay together long. If they do not give it to lexus they will give it to a luxury home, vacation or something else. It is a question of what you value.
