Agloco – Get paid to surf the web

I read about this company on John Chow’s blog and was at first hesitant to sign up or even post about it.  But after a few days of thinking I actually decided to sign up because I was curious as to how a company like this works.

Agloco stands for A Global Community.  They make money through advertising on a small banner at the bottom of you web browser.  As users browse the web, the banner displays ads which are paid for by the advertisers to Agloco.  Here what the banner looks like:

How does this work?  It’s your standard pyramid, MLM, network marketing type of structure where you sign up people under you and those people sign up people under them. When you and the people under you surf the web with the banner at the bottom, Agloco pays you for your time surfing.

Why did I decide to join?  Normally, I pass on these things as scams but I decided to sign up for several reasons.  First, Agloco pays only for up to 5 hours of surfing per month.  I could clear that in a single day, so therefore I would only be running the banner one day a month.  Second, it doesn’t cost you anything to sign up.  Third, the live banner hasn’t even been launched yet so getting in on the ground floor is always a plus (imagine if it becomes a huge company like Google and you were in early – yeah, it’s a stretch… but you never know).  Fourth, it’s doesn’t interfere with my daily routine.  I don’t have to do anything out of the ordinary.  Fifth, I’m curious, I want to understand how it works in detail.  Sixth, What the hell, I just signed up.

How much can you get paid?  According to their calculator, as a single user, just putting in 5 hours a month, you’d get like 5 earnings which I thought meant dollars at first glance.  (But reading the fine print, you actually get 5 hours of credit which may be converted to 5 shares of company stock).  I was playing with their member calculator and honestly the numbers seem unrealistic to me.  But then again, its not convertible to dollars or any monetary form.  It says that if you get 5 direct referrals and they each get 5 below them, you can make 5,000 earnings a month.  What is earnings per month?  I’m guessing it equals usage hours.

Agloco is pays users in usage hours.  These hours can be converted into shares of company stock at a rate of 1 share per hour for you and 1/4 share per hour for your referrals.  So you may end up with 5,000 shares of Agloco.  As time goes by, the shares would become diluted with more and more shares being created.  The way you get cash is if the company has positive cashflow, which could be never, I guess.  Maybe they’ll decide to pay out $0.00001 per share at some point.  They are in control of it.

The largest upside to this company is that if they are successful (and that’s a big IF) and go public, you could be sitting on a crap load of shares.

What it came down to for me was that there’s nothing to lose for signing up.  It doesn’t cost you anything to sign up and if you’re on the net all day you’re not doing anything out of your way to try this.  The worst that could happen is I gather up a bunch of worthless usage hours.  The best that could happen is that they are successful and the shares are worth something.  I’m also very interested to see what type of network this blog produces as I’m not going to advertise this anywhere else.  I figure that I surf the internet all day anyway and I’m sure most of you can get 5 hours a month easily so why not try it?  I’ll be posting whatever good or bad results on here.

You can join Agloco here - http://www.agloco.com/r/BBBC0073

Once you sign up you will be given a user ID similar to mine http://www.agloco.com/r/BBBC0073.  Use this ID to sign up other people. The easiest way to do that is the put the ID into the URL.  Just replace the BBBC0073 with your ID and you’ll get credit for all signs from your link.

  3. Perhaps I did not read the site correctly, but from what I can tell, you do not earn cash from participation.

My understanding is that you earn hours, which may be exchanged for shares eventually (which may or may not be worth something depending on if you can trade them), and if the company produces a profit, then those profits will be distributed to the members.

That is how I read it at least…

  4. Jester, you are correct. I think that the chances of getting actual cash is pretty slim at this point.

One major thing I noticed when I signed up is that they didn’t ask for my SS#. All I signed up with was an email address. That tells me that I probably won’t be getting cash anytime soon.

Your hours get converted to shares at a rate of one share per hour for you, and 1/4 share per hour for your referral. You have to reach a certain limit to get shares, who knows what that limit is, it could be 1,000,000 hours.

Thanks for the comment, I’m going to edit my post to reflect that.

  5. Ken, your a super smart guy but I can see a post in your distant future reading… “Agloco = junk. lol I dont know, I honestly hope you prove me wrong, but at this rate you probably have a chance at making more money off buying a $1 lotto ticket daily.

  6. Marco,

I’m pretty skeptical of this also. But since I’ve been starting to learn about SEO, affiliates and making money online I decided to sign up to see how it goes. I’d like to be able to report how a company like this works and what it delivers.

It’s not going to cost me anything to participate. I was torn on posting this, but I figured that in order to get a downline I needed some sort of advertising. I also consciously tried not to push people to sign up as they read it.  However, I also did not want to discourage anyone from signing up under me.  I think readers of my post will realize that the chances of getting any cash is pretty slim.

Of course, there’s always the slim hope that this thing blows up and I have 1,000,000 shares worth $5 each in 2010.

I’ll post a follow up as to my suspicions and concerns about this.
